Creswick Museum

Establishing a museum in Creswick became a goal for the town in the 1940s with the passing of the older generations born in Creswick and district. Mary Lindsay (sister of the Lindsay artists) wrote to Mrs Curtin after Prime Minister John Curtin’s death, asking for an historical token for the future museum.

Creswick Museum was eventually established in 1970 in the former Creswick Shire municipal offices in the Town Hall building. The foundation stone was laid in February 1876 and Creswick Borough Council moved in to their new offices in June 1877. The Town Hall building was listed on the National Trust register in 1971.

The museum collection includes examples of old colonial paintings, artworks by Victor Litherland and some members of the Lindsay family of artists; the story of Creswick and district gold mining, part of which was the worst gold mining accident in Australia at the New Australasia mine in 1882; the evolution of local government in the area; and aspects of district agriculture.

The museum collection also includes various research materials including Creswick Advertiser newspapers, maps, various rate books, World War Honor boards database, and personal papers of former residents who have researched topics of local interest. The Creswick Museum Research Centre is located corner Raglan and Cambridge streets.
